Make "Whipped Cream" Yourself
or: All Fake Whipped Cream Tastes Like Coconut
COCONUT WHIPPING CREAM (NATURE’S CHARM) // REVIEW //
sucks ☐ / passable ✓ / great ☐ / perfect ☐
I really went back & forth as to how to rate this. really, i think anything from “great” to “sucks” could work & it all depends on one thing:
HOW MUCH DO YOU LIKE COCONUT?
honestly, i like coconut ok. it doesn’t bother me. i like it a lot as dried coconut especially; if it’s in a recipe it’s just fine.
but.
just eating a can of raw coconut? idk… it is… not for me.
that’s what this is.
ok, but what makes this different from any other can of coconut? it’s the amount of stabilizers etc & whatnot, this definitely has a more “creamy” vibe than just your regular can of coconut1
time & time again I have heard, “making [Fake Whipped Cream] is easy! Just grab a can of coconut [mostly the cream bit] and whip it up!” and let me tell you. i have tried. and tried. what i got was like… coconut. from a can. no “whippiness” to speak of. i mean, it still tasted ok on top of pumpkin pie, except for the fact that it tasted overwhelmingly of canned coconut.
yeah ok; if you want dairy free whipping cream that DOESN’T taste like canned coconut you’re out of luck. because no other “fake milk” has the fat content & whippability.2 they will just sit there as a bowl of fake milk and do nothing.
so as far as the coconut version goes: the ones from a spray can are a little better; they pretty much capture the experience of canned whipped cream which is definitely *fun*… but just tastes mostly like sugar. and is too sweet. and what about that homemade whipped cream texture? well you won’t get it from a spray can that’s for sure, there’s too much air in it.
so when I saw this on the shelf I was like: ok i’ll try it.
and there is some success, as you can see:
isn’t it pretty? it whips up into nice peaks and has a definite vibe reminiscent of whipped cream. so, as long as you are really into the taste of canned coconut, you will probably very much enjoy this.
pros: actually whips, unlike regular canned coconut milk
cons: still tastes like canned coconut
now I have this feeling that *maybe* you could do some flavoring experiments if you wanted to have an experience less coconutty. it could be potentially interesting. you’d have to get a pretty powerful flavor to overpower Pure Coconut but I think it could definitely be done.
would I eat it as-is?
no.
[however, others, who are ~really into coconut~ have declared it “delicious!”]
so like. if you like coconut a lot, i’d say go for it. it is definitely fake whipping cream that actually whips.
WHERE TO BUY: looks like they have a website but i’m not sure if you can buy through it? it might just be a thing that shows what all their products are, i couldn’t figure out how to click anything. i found this coconut milk in-person at an asian market. it’s also available on amazon.
p.s. I feel like I probably bought their least interesting product. they’ve also got sweetened condensed coconut milk [& the same with oat milk], coconut caramel & butterscotch sauce, chocolate fudge sauce, matcha sauce, & custard & pudding.
***general disclaimer. check certification & ingredients, use your judgment. not everything I review is certified
which also has stablilizers in it. i mean, most canned coconut does, it’s not an unusual thing. guar gum or whatever.
science! yay!
This is HILARIOUS!!! :)
"Others," huh? ;-)
Coconut. Mmm. :)
